about

Deer Tracks is my collective title for a number of short solo mandolin pieces that I have composed here in the early years of the 21st century. Just across the Upper Iowa River from my neighborhood in Decorah are some beautiful bluffs, laced with man-made hiking and bike trails. Running between these human trails is a complex network of animals-only pathways. At some point I began to think of these slightly odd mandolin pieces as being my own deer trails; music slightly off of my own well-worn musical paths.

In May of 2013 I launched a Kickstarter project to raise funds to make proper studio recordings of some of these pieces and to see if a positive response to my offering would "kickstart" me into creating some new Deer Tracks pieces. Support was quick and generous and I composed nearly 30 new pieces, including five pieces commissioned by Kickstarter supporters.

On this CD I present 21 of the over 50 Deer Tracks I had composed as of August 2013, and I dedicate this recording to everyone who encouraged and supported me in this process. Without my wonderful Kickstarter supporters this CD, and a lot of new music, would not exist. Many, many thanks.
